If you’re a fan of the Mediterranean’s many charms, you should know that its finest lighthouses are to be found in Mallorca. For many people, visiting lighthouses represents an important part of finding out about a community’s culture and way of life. Mallorca’s lighthouses are treasure troves of history and art, so whatever you do, don’t miss this aspect of the island.

If you’re thinking about visiting Mallorca, you can’t afford to miss the selection of lighthouses put together for you by Hotels VIVA

- Alcanada lighthouse

This was built in 1861 and is 25 metres above sea level, on the small island of Alcanada, which was the rendezvous point for sailors due to sail to Alcudia port. In the event of an emergency, the lighthouse keepers sent out visual signals using a mirror or by flying a white flag so that sailors could set sail to save those in need of rescue, as long as the weather permitted it.

- Formentor lighthouse

Located 210 metres above sea level on the tip of the Formentor peninsula is the Cap de Formentor lighthouse, inaugurated in 1863. A small chapel was built during its construction so that the employees could attend mass on Sundays and continue working.

As one of Mallorca’s most visited places, it caters well to the needs of tourists. You’re sure to fall in love with its pine trees, surrounded by the charms of the sea.

- Punta de la Avanzada lighthouse

29 metres in height, this lighthouse, constructed in 1905, is located very near the port and bay of Pollensa. Over the course of its history the lighthouse keepers who run it have helped to raise the alarm about vessels in distress, thanks in part to the fact that its lighting system includes heating in its lenses for foggy days.

The area surrounding the lighthouse is full of vegetation and offers spectacular views of the Mediterranean Sea. It’s undoubtedly an ideal spot for spending a day out among family and friends.

- Capdepera lighthouse

Without doubt one of the most striking of Mallorca’s lighthouses is the Capdepera lighthouse, which is located 76 metres above sea level. It is one of the oldest, having been inaugurated in 1861, and is now easily accessible by road. It is an excellent vantage point for viewing one of the tallest cliffs.

For many years it represented a place of refuge for a considerable number of seafarers who were affected by the high winds off the Balearic Islands. Together with its keepers, this lighthouse was awarded the Beneficence Cross by the Spanish government in 1869.

- Portocolom lighthouse

Surrounded by various tourist and culinary attractions is the Portocolom lighthouse, 42 metres above sea level.  Its painted stripes give it a highly traditional and attractive appearance, and indeed it is one of the most aesthetically pleasing of Mallorca’s lighthouses. Once there, you shouldn’t miss the chance to visit the town of Felanitx and discover all the culture that it harbours.

The best thing about visiting any of these lighthouses on Mallorca is undoubtedly staying until sunset and witnessing one of the island’s finest visual experiences. Mallorca’s sky takes on orange and yellow hues that will etch themselves into your fondest memories.
