Are you familiar with the best wineries in Mallorca? The island has a great winemaking tradition thanks to its mild climate and unique terrain.

These two characteristics make our island an ideal place for wine production, with more than 70 wineries, 500 wine brands and two protected designations of origin (Pla i Llevant, which covers 19 municipalities in the centre and east of the island, and Binissalem, which extends over a land of gentle relief, protected from the winds of the Sierra de Tramuntana mountain range).

Mallorca also has three geographical indications: Vino de la Tierra de Mallorca, Vino de la Tierra Serra de Tramuntana-Costa Nord and Vino de la Tierra Illes Balears.

Which wines are produced in Mallorca?

Mallorca's wineries produce different wines, all of which stand out for their quality and the use of local grapes.

In the Pla i Llevant PDO, the local varieties Premsal Blanc, Giró Ros, Callet and Manto Negro are used to produce red, white, rosé, sparkling, liqueur and semi-sparkling wines.

In the Binissalem PDO, on the other hand, we find red, white, rosé and sparkling wines, the most famous being the red wine with 30% Manto Negro, a local variety that gives it an intense colour and a very fruity aroma.

The Vino de la Tierra Serra from Tramuntana-Costa Nord is famous for "la Malvasía", a white wine produced from the grapes of the same name, which grow on terraces by the sea, from Andratx all the way to Pollença.

And, among the Vino de la Tierra Illes wines, the white variety Parellada and the Pinor Noir for the reds stand out.

Wine tourism in Mallorca: three wineries not to be missed

Visiting Mallorca's wineries is a good choice if you like wine tourism and gastronomy.

Wine tourism is an appealing activity that you can do alone, as a couple, or with friends. There are plenty of wineries where you can learn about the winemaking process and taste the wines.

Other benefits of wine tourism are:

  • You'll get to know new places.
  • You'll learn about local culture and traditions.
  • You'll enjoy a fun-filled day out.
  • You'll become familiar with the local gastronomy.
  • You’ll experience new sensations
  • You’ll be able to try some of the best wines on the island

As for our recommendations for wineries in Mallorca, we’d encourage you to visit the following:

Vinyes Mortitx

The Vinyes Mortitx winery was inaugurated in 2005 and is located in a unique spot in the Serra de Tramuntana, in the town of Escorca, 390 metres above sea level, and is equipped with the most innovative technology.

Their white, rosé and red wines reflect the distinctive features and character of the land they come from.

Among the former, we can highlight a sweet wine made from frozen grapes and Malvasia, which has an intense aroma and smooth flavour.

Its red wines are made with premium varieties such as syrah, merlot, and cabernet sauvignon.

This charming little winery, in the middle of holm oak and pine forests, is an ideal place if you want to combine the tasting of quality wines with beautiful landscapes.

Celler Tianna Negre

The Celler Tianna Negre winery is located in the town of Binissalem, in the centre of the island.

With just over 6,000 inhabitants, Binissalem is the heart of the Denomination of Origin of the same name and one of the nerve centres of wine tourism in Mallorca, as it has an excellent wine-growing tradition.

Celler Tianna Negre is an excellent example.

For years, its owners have devoted themselves to cultivating the native Manto Negro grape in the traditional politxó style (on regularly spaced wooden poles).

Celler Tianna Negre opened its doors in 2007 and has since become one of Mallorca's most popular wine cellars.

All of their vineyards are organically farmed and their grapes are harvested by hand, which gives their BIO-labelled wines exceptional quality.

During your visit, you can tour part of the vineyards, visit the facilities, and enjoy a tasting guided by the sommelier.

Bodegas Vi Rei

A visit to Bodegas Vi Rei will not only enable you to discover one of the most emblematic wine cellars in Mallorca, but you'll also discover the delights of Mallorca's Migjorn region, located in the southern part of the island.

This fledgling winery in Llucmajor has the largest and best-kept vineyard in Mallorca, and the quality of its wines has earned it numerous awards.

Highlights include its barrel-fermented Malvasía wine (with its deep, clean, and bright yellow tones), the Caçador Mallorqí (made from Callet and Manto Negro grapes, with its intense ruby colour) and the Es Pop (made from Manto Negro and Callet grapes with a hint of green apple).

On your visit to the Vi Rei winery you'll be able to enjoy guided tours of the vineyards and a selection of exclusive wine and food tastings (breads and wines, show cooking, picnics, typical Mallorcan products, cheeses and wine & chocolate pairings).

A truly unique experience.
