Staying safe and healthy while on holiday
Whilst most holidays to Spain are enjoyed trouble-free, it’s still important to set your sights on staying safe and healthy during your trip. So, although you’ve on holiday to relax it’s good to keep an eye on your belongings. If you do find yourself in a difficult situation, the emergency number in Spain is 112, and there is a dedicated English-speaking police line on +34 902 10 21 12. If your passport is stolen, you will also need to get in touch with the British Consulate on +34 917 14 63 00. If you do report a crime you will be given a police report which you’ll need to hold on to for insurance purposes.
Unfamiliar surroundings often make us unaware of what is going on around us but it’s important to take precautions especially with the elements. Temperatures can be extreme so make sure you have the right sunscreen lotion and drink plenty of water. Be care too with the sea and swimming pools; even if you’re a good swimmer you can sometimes get into difficulties. Check out ABTA’s swim safe pages for more safety advice.
Our general safety advice would be to tell you not to take unnecessary risks – check that your taxi is official, that your belongings are safe, that you know where your kids are, and that only you have had access to your drink! We don’t mean to worry you with this advice, but we would like you to get the most out of your holiday, and that means staying safe and healthy while you’re with us.
Remember too that if you decide to bring your own vehicle across with you, driving rules in Spain and not exactly the same as in the UK. To start with, you’ll have to drive on the right and you might need an international driving permit. Spanish rules on drink-driving are very strict and penalties are severe. So, be careful out there!
