The Mallorca 140.6 has become an unmissable event for lovers of outdoor tourism and high-energy sports.
This race, which in its first edition was already established as one of the most important triathlons in our country, and one of the most important sporting events in the whole of the Balearic Islands, held its second edition on the 24th of September with an excellent turnout. Almost 400 athletes completed the middle-distance course, of which almost 60% were foreigners, and 20% were female participants.
Once again, VIVA sponsored this sporting event
Our VIVA BLUE Hotel organised the post-race party for all the Mallorca 140.6 participants, and they were able to enjoy our swimming pool, buffet, and all the services that an athlete could need at the end of a race like this.
The VIVA BLUE Hotel is a real paradise for triathletes, who need to work on their endurance, physical fitness and technique to be able to compete in the three disciplines that make up the race.
It was a great end to a fast, spectacular race, held on one of the most attractive circuits in Europe.
Swim-bike-run: The format of the Mallorca 140.6, the middle&long distance triathlon in Playa de Muro
The Mallorca Triathlon is the only long-distance "Ironman" type race on our island.
It can be run in two formats: medium distance, which is the so-called Mallorca 140.6, or long distance, also known as the Half.
The number of registrations is limited to 1,000 triathletes (400 participants in the first type, and 600 in the second).
One of the main attractions of the Mallorca Triathlon is its unrivalled natural surroundings, as it takes place in the bay of Alcúdia, in the area of Playa de Muro.
The first part of the race is given over to swimming, with a circuit in the waters of the bay itself, which is known for its light-coloured sand, crystal-clear waters, mild temperatures and a depth of just over 5 metres.
The bike course is the toughest and most complex. It's the central part of the triathlon, covering 89 kilometres in total, with 357 metres of elevation gain per lap.
This section runs through the north of Mallorca, passing through some of the most important points of this part of the island, such as Playa de Muro, Sa Poble, Búger, Llubí, Santa Margalida and Can Picafort.
The drafting or wheel control (with a distance of 20 metres) is one of the keys to the Mallorca 140.6, and it's crucial to ensure all the triathletes cover the 180 kilometres on their bike in optimal conditions and with the best safety precautions.
The third and final part of the Mallorca triathlon is the running stage, which also takes place in Playa de Muro, along a circular 7-kilometre urban circuit with two refreshment posts and an additional water point.
The triathletes who complete the full race (the "Half") do 6 laps of the circuit, while the half-distance triathletes only need to complete three to reach the finish line, which in the Mallorca 140.6 of 2022 has been located right inside our Hotel VIVA BLUE.
This year, the organisers have also included a fun "Vintage" category for triathletes using bikes and equipment from the 80s and 90s.
This category is a tribute to the pioneers of this sport, which is becoming more and more popular, and participation is limited to 50 participants for both the 140.6 and Half categories.
The event has been so successful that the organisers have already announced the "Vintage" slots for the next Mallorca 140.6, which is expected to be held on 30th September 2023 in Playa de Muro.
