Mallorca wears white for spring!
During the final weeks of winter a spectacular phenomenon unfolds on Mallorca. Since the temperature on the island is pleasant throughout the year, spring comes slightly early and Mallorca’s fields are decked in white thanks to the almond trees in blossom, giving rise to what is sometimes referred to as “Mallorcan snow”.
Almond trees that produce white blossom are sweet almonds while those that have pink blossom are bitter. It’s the combination of the two that produces the spectacular sight you mustn’t miss! You should also know that almond trees play a very important role in Mallorca, and indeed there are more than 7 million individual trees of various varieties growing on the island as a whole.
They are fundamental to Mallorca’s economy because they are used not only for food but also in the cosmetics industry. Hence as well as blanketing the region with beauty they remind us of what they mean for the island’s people and their wellbeing. In fact, the Ametlla de Mallorca, or Mallorcan almond, has been listed in the EU’s PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) register since 2014.
Places where you can take part in the Almond Tree tour
What is the best way of witnessing this phenomenon in spring? By undertaking the Almond Tree Tour in Mallorca, which you can do from various points of the island. Here we put forward various suggestions enabling you to tour around by car, on foot or by bicycle:
- In the Serra de Tramuntana you’ll find many almond trees in blossom. This will also give you a chance to visit a place that was officially classified as a World cultural heritage site in 2010.
- The road from Selva to Moscarí in the central western part of the island, as well as in towns and villages such as Marratxí, Sencelles, Inca, Felanitx, Lloseta, Bunyola and Santa María.
- The fields around Llucmajor, which you can visit by car and offer incredible photo opportunities. The top of Puig de Randa will give you panoramic views of the plain known as the Pla de Mallorca, thronged with almond trees in spring. You can also visit Vilafranca de Bonany and appreciate large fields of almonds from the Bonany hermitage.
- Sóller and Bunyola: these are the main almond-producing settlements anywhere on the island, and consequently it is very easy to find plenty of fields with almond trees on view.
- Towns such as Manacor and Son Servera - the latter even holds an almond blossom fair, known as the Fira de la flor d’ametler, where you can learn about the many uses that Mallorcans make of their popular almonds.
- The train journey from Palma to Sóller will take you through fields of almond, orange and lemon trees.
