The Santuari de Lluc, also known as the Santuari de Santa María de Lluc, is the first Marian Shrine in the Balearic Island, dating back to the 13th century. Lluc is much more than just a monastery; it forms part of Mallorcan identity.
This visit is perfect for tourists who want to enjoy much more than just sun, sea and partying. It’s considered a genuine oasis of calm, spirituality and beauty, so it comes as no surprise that thousands of people visit this monastery each year, to immerse themselves in its history and surroundings.
Located in one of Mallorca’s most beautiful and privileged spots, the Santuari de Lluc is a place of pilgrimage. It was erected in the 17th century in order to worship the Virgin of Lluc, patron saint of Mallorca, known as “La Moreneta” because of the dark colour of her skin.
In 1962, Pope John XXIII declared the Church of Lluc as a Basilica Menor, an honorary title only awarded to those churches considered to be truly special. The image of the virgin can be seen on the main altar. If you travel to this Mallorcan island, you can’t miss out on a visit to this monastery as it’s sure to not leave you indifferent.
Located in the heart of the Serra de Tramuntana in a valley 525m above sea level, the Santuari de Lluc is in ideal surroundings for those in search of history and nature.
This is a perfect destination for lovers of cycling, hiking or walking, in particular the Ruta de Pedra en Sec or the route which heads down the Torrent de Pareis canyon, all the way to the Sa Calobra cove. The latter is much better in a group and if possible, accompanied by a guide who really knows the area, as it’s rather complex. It’s definitely worth embarking on this route, as it’s one of the most beautiful coves in Mallorca.
Although you can reach the Santuari de Lluc by car, the road does have some very tight curves, so please be careful at all times. The landscape is packed with olive, almond and citrus groves, and if you look closely, you might even be able to see the famous mountain goats on the hillside.
As it’s a very popular destination, you’ll find restaurants, cafes, patisseries, a souvenir shop and even a pharmacy, both inside the monastery itself and the surroundings.
In addition to the monastery, you’ll also be able to enjoy many other locations of special interest in the surrounding area, including a pretty and relaxed botanical garden with more than 200 different native plants or an interesting museum featuring collections relating to Mallorcan archaeology, culture, ceramics and art.
Santuari de Lluc also has a large, covered area with capacity for up to 4000 people, perfect for celebrations, meetings or events, which tend to be religious or spiritual.
The festivities in honour of the Virgin of Lluc take place on 12th September, with a procession of children carrying lanterns. Visitors dance and taste a large variety of local speciality cuisine.
The legend tells of a youngster called Lluc, around the year 1229, who found the statue of the Virgin in the Serra de Tramuntana. The young boy took the statue to the town priest, but the next day, the statue had disappeared from the church and appeared in the same place the boy had found it previously.
The inhabitants believed that this “miracle” could only mean that the virgin wished for a shrine to be built right in that spot, a shrine that would then be transformed into the Santuari de Lluc as we know it today.
