Are you an adrenaline junkie? Fancy trying out a new experience on your holidays? Mallorca has acquired international fame as a climbing venue, especially for the variety known as deep-water soloing, which consists of the rope-free climbing of cliff faces that rise vertically out of the sea.

This may be something you already know, because the Sierra de Tramuntana and the entire Mallorcan coast have earned a worldwide reputation. The fact is that Mallorca and its topography, with its rocky interior, offer a spectacular landscape for the sport of climbing.

If you love adventure and being in contact with nature, you really ought to give it a try. Climbing is a sport that can be addictive, owing to the fact that it is done in the open air (although indoor climbing walls can also be used) and requires both physical and mental effort.

It is a sport that has everything, and Mallorca provides it with an idyllic backdrop.

At Hotels VIVA we’ve drawn up a selection of the finest climbing routes and places for climbing on Mallorca:

Sierra de Tramuntana: epicentre of climbing on Mallorca

The topography of the Sierra de Tramuntana makes it the centre for climbing “schools” in the region, because it features a host of routes suitable for beginners to learn sports climbing. It is a place for taking advantage of the many natural routes on offer for all levels of ability and expertise.

- Fraguels – Bunyola

One of the most popular zones for climbing on Mallorca within the Sierra de Tramontana is Fraguels, in Bunyola, given that it has more than 70 routes with levels of difficulty graded between 5 and 9 for year-round climbing. It is a highly attractive venue for climbers because it boasts vertical rockfaces, short resistance routes and moderate overhangs.

- Sa Gubia – Bunyola

This is one of Mallorca’s outstanding climbing areas, with a wide variety of routes of all types and levels of difficulty, being ideal for both beginners and experts.

- Castell d’Alaró

This area is located right in the heart of the Sierra de Tramuntana and is becoming increasingly popular owing to the quality of its limestone and its incredible rock formations.

- Galilea, Puig Major and Es Gorg Blau

Remaining in the north of Mallorca, we find these three very popular climbing areas, particularly appropriate for enjoying in the summer. The quality of their limestone and their height lead to highly attractive and varied climbing routes.

- Calviá

No list would be complete without mentioning this area located to the south of the Sierra de Tramuntana, because it is ideal for those who are starting out in the sport, being a perfect venue for families and groups of friends who want to start from scratch.
