Puig Major is the highest point not only on Mallorca but all the Balearic Islands. Visiting is an enormous pleasure owing to beauty of the landscapes that surround it, such as Sa Coma Fosca and Morro d’en Pelut, and the enchanting composition conferred by the peak itself and the lesser summits that accompany it: the Penyal des Migdia and the Sierra de Na Rius.
Puig Major (or Puig Mayor) climbs to a height of 1,445 metres and is located in the incredible Sierra de Tramuntana, in the municipality of Escorca.
The secondary peaks to Puig Major are the already-mentioned Penyal des Migdia (barely 50 metres lower) and the Sierra de Na Rius and together they form some stunning Mallorcan mountain landscapes. As a matter of curiosity, it is worth pointing out that a military installation is currently located on the summit of Puig Major: a radar station run by the Spanish air force.
Puig Major belongs to the Sierra de Tramuntana, an enchanting mountain chain that runs along the north east of Mallorca, stretching out over 90 km and, despite having a maximum width of only 15 km, crossing a total of 18 municipalities. These include the delightful and well-known Calvià, Pollença and Escorca.
The Sierra de Tramuntana, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the cultural landscapes category, is one of the many marvels of Mallorca on account of having achieved a unique combination that is extremely difficult to find: a perfect and harmonious symbiosis between a splendid natural landscape and a collection of settlements with an artistic, architectural and cultural heritage of immense value that respects the environment to the utmost.
Put another way, the Sierra de Tramuntana shows that the actions of mankind need not necessarily be incompatible with respect for geology, flora and fauna, it being possible for these to coexist in a mutually beneficial way, leading to results of sublime beauty. All this is always carried out with strict regard for sustainability and rational production processes, which ensure respect for the environment and conservation of resources for future generations.
Getting to know the Sierra de Tramuntana is the best way of steeping oneself in the culture, traditions and indeed the purest and most deeply-rooted identity of Mallorca. And all this in harmonious interaction with the most delightful natural scenery, where summits as imposing as Puig Major, Massanella and Galatzó, surrounded by charming woodlands of shrubs, holm oaks and pines, together form an irresistible ensemble with the island’s most prized beaches.
Hotels VIVA offer a range of hotels and Aparthotels that undoubtedly provide the perfect place for getting to know the Sierra de Tramuntana and its most iconic locations, among them the summit of Puig Major.
