The best moment of the year has arrived… Welcome to the day of San Juan!
In just a few hours all Menorca will have a deep breath and all Ciutadella will jump for joy because of the sound of the flabiol, the traditional flute of the Balearic islands, which announces that the day that all the people in Menorca have been waiting for has just arrived: the day of San Juan!
However we must be honest: the party already started last Sunday, with the “Dia des Be”. Although the most known animals of San Juan in Ciutadella are horses, there is another animal that becomes important this day: the “be”, which is a lamb decorated with different elements.
The “homo des Be”, which means “lamb man”, is a young man who is dressedin sheepskin who represents Saint John and goes through Ciutadella loading a lamb to start the party.
But, as we saig before, it is not until the flute sounds that the most important party in Menorca starts and that moment becomes on of the happiest for all the people who live in Menorca and for those who are visiting the island on its most important party. There is a group of men representing different people of the island, the “Caixers”, who are in charge to assure that the party is exactly how it has to be. Then all the horse riders, known in Menorca as “Cavallers” start the first “caragols”, which is the name of three lap tours that they do along a defined area. Some of this “caragols” take place with some traditional and amazing music and all of them have always a lot of emotion.
And then it comes the day that everyone who has lived this party in Ciutadella has marked on the calendar: June 24th. First the mass and then the height of Sant Joan: the “Jocs des Pla”. If you’re staying in Vanity Eden Binibeca or in Viva Menorca, you can’t miss all the thing that all the riders do, such as running side by side on their horses, one of the most exciting moments of this party.
Nerves and excitement, fun and emotion, “pomades” and “Cavallers” and, above all, the best party of the Balearic islands ends on June 24th with the cry of thousands of people who start counting days until next Sant Joan.
