Aunque el calendario santoral estipule que Sant Martí es el 11 de noviembre, este entrañable municipio menorquín decidió, en algún momento de la historia, trasladar esta fiesta al verano, en concreto al tercer fin de semana de julio, y así, junto a las fiestas patronales de los demás pueblos de la isla, poder hacer más ruido y encajarla en periodo estival, con temperaturas más agradables, más horas de sol, vacaciones…
¡Y resultó! Las fiestas de Sant Martí de Es Mercadal son unas fiestas muy participativas y dignas de ver. Igual que en las de Sant Joan de Ciutadella, en las fiestas de Sant Martí el protagonista es el caballo. Desde el primer ‘toc de fabiol’ (toque de flauta) que inaugura la fiesta, podréis verles desfilar, engalanados, cabalgados por sus elegantes ‘caixers’, por las calles del pueblo haciendo sus famosos ‘caragols’.
Los jinetes, que reciben el nombre de ‘caixers’, representan los distintos estamentos de la sociedad (payés, sacerdote, alcalde, soltero, casado…). Para ellos es un honor ser nombrados ‘caixers’ i dedican todo el año a preparar este momento. Siempre que escuchéis la música típica de la banda municipal, el ‘jaleo’, sabréis que los caballos están cerca.
Mucha precaución. Dejad siempre espacio cuando se acerquen, y, si podéis, y sólo cuando el caballo esté en reposo, miraos en el espejo que llevan en su frente. Eso significa que el año que viene podréis volver.
Sant Martí party in Es Mercadal
Although the santoral calendar stipulates that Sant Marti is on 11 November, this endearing Menorcan municipality decided, at some moment in history, to move this party to summer, specifically the third weekend of July, that way, with the local parties of the other villages of the island, they were able to make more noise and celebrate its party during the summer season, with more pleasant temperatures, more sun hours, vacation...
And it turned out! The Sant Martí party is very participatory and worth seeing. As in Sant Joan of Ciutadella, on the Sant Martí celebration the protagonist is the horse. From the first 'toc de fabiol' (flute touch) that opens the festival, you can see them parading, ridden by its elegant 'caixers' through the streets of the town making its famous 'caragols'.
The riders, who are called 'caixers' represent different segments of society (peasant, priest, mayor, single, married ...). For them it is an honor to be named 'caixers' they spend all year getting prepared for this time. Whenever you hear the typical music of the municipal band, the 'jaleo', you know that horses are nearby.
Caution. Let always some space when approaching, and if you can, and only when the horse is stopped, look at yourselves in the mirror bearing on his forehead. That means that next year you may return.
