Maó tiene un aire señorial que te transporta con toda facilidad a los siglos XVII y XVIII. Con un sencillo ejercicio mental somos capaces de imaginar carruajes por sus calles, señoras arrastrando sus largos vestidos, caballeros fumando en pipa en las esquinas…
Y entre todo este ajetreo nos encontramos de frente con él: el Teatre Principal de Maó. Una joya arquitectónica que ha congregado desde hace siglos los mejores espectáculos de ópera del planeta.
Es el teatro de ópera más antiguo de España. Fue construido en 1829 por el arquitecto italiano Giovanni Palagi, sobre los restos de la muralla que rodeaba Maó.
Su forma de herradura, siguiendo el estilo clásico italiano, le confiere esta acústica inmejorable de la que puede presumir este hermoso teatro.
180 años de actividad contínua y de talento a borbotones. Durante estos años ha ido sufriendo algunas reformas para adaptarlo a cada época y a sus necesidades, pero siempre conservando su encanto y su valor histórico, principales atributos del Teatre de Maó.
