Mallorca isn’t only home to spectacular nature and stunning beaches. The Mallorcan wine industry has boomed in recent years, and, with the growth of gastronomic tourism, wine tasting, wine tours and winery visits in Mallorca have been on the rise.
Despite being a long-standing tradition on the island, wine production has gained momentum in recent years, especially with the recognition of the area's Denomination of Origin labels, which affirm its quality. Along with this, there has been a growth in wine tourism, and it is common to find many wineries offering wine tastings in Mallorca. Hotels VIVA invites you to try out this great experience for your palate - you’ll enjoy the best wines around and, at the same time, you’ll learn about the art of wine tasting in Mallorca.
The Serra de Tramuntana has a long-standing tradition of winemaking. There are 5 municipalities in the area that make up the Binissalem Designation of Origin, with 16 different wineries in the towns of Santa Maria del Camí, Consell, Binissalem, Santa Eugènia and Sencelles. Another area with a great winemaking tradition is the Pla i Llevant Designation of Origin. In this area, there are 18 different municipalities and vines have been cultivated in this part of the island since Roman times.
Among the best wineries to visit in Mallorca we have Son Prim, which is found in the pla de Mallorca - the heart of the island - in the municipality of Sencelles. This region is especially renowned for its winegrowing. The Son Prim winery has one of the most up-to-date facilities for the production of quality Mallorcan wines, and the vineyard that surrounds the winery attracts many tourists year after year.
Bodega Ramanyà is another of the best-known wineries, and it can be found in Santa Maria del Camí. It has a collection of more than two thousand bottles of wine, and it also has an extensive display of tools and machinery typical of pre-industrial Mallorcan wine-making. This is an ideal place for wine tasting in Mallorca, and you can accompany them with some tasty local delicacies.
On your visit to the Mallorcan wineries, you mustn’t miss the Vi Rei winery, which has an experience you won’t find anywhere else: a train ride through its vineyards. After the ride, you can have a tour of its facilities, such as the barrel room or the bottling room. It is, undoubtedly, one of the most original experiences in the whole of Mallorca.
If you’re interested in traditional wines, then José Luis Ferrer, a classic Mallorcan bodega, is the one to visit. Founded in 1931, it specialises in bottling oak-barrel wines of the Manto Negro variety. This is one of the island's native grape varieties, and they harvest it on their 130 hectares of land.
In addition to discovering new flavours through wine tastings in Mallorca, the island's wines are an excellent gift for even the most demanding palates. Mallorca makes the most of its climate and location to produce top-quality wines in its numerous wineries which can boast years of history and tradition.
Dry muscatel wines stand out above all, and here we can highlight the Prensal Blanco, Parellada and Macabeo varieties. These red wines, which are a must in these wineries, are characterised by their intense fruity flavour. The production of white and Chardonnay wines, as well as rosé, also produces exceptional results. The wines that receive the most rewards are usually the white wines and the Sauvignon blanc, fermented in typical oak barrels. As you can see, there are many flavours to explore in these wine tastings in Mallorca!
But, as well as enjoying wine tasting in Mallorca, don’t forget that the island is also famous for its gastronomy, which is a perfect accompaniment for the different wines produced on the island. Very close to the wineries, you will find restaurants with typical local dishes and staff who will advise you on how to pair each glass with the perfect aperitif to bring out its flavour, such as some special local cheeses.
Some wines work best with something sweet, and so, in many of the tasting experiences, you’ll be able to enjoy different chocolates as an accompaniment. Chocolate is an especially good pairing for some red and dry white wines.
On this beautiful Mediterranean island, there are activities for all tastes. And, undoubtedly, wine tasting and winery visits in Mallorca are one of the best things you could do with your partner, friends, or family. It truly is an unmissable experience in Mallorca, and, of course, you’ll be able to take a bottle (or two!) of the best wines of our land back home with you!
