Chocolate, cream, angel hair, sobrasada (smoked sausage paste) or even pumpkin, plain or sprinkled with icing sugar, Mallorcan ensaimadas come in plenty of combinations added to the same base, consisting of water, eggs, sugar, yeast, butter and flour.

Ensaimadas are Mallorca food par excellence, so if you visit the island you won’t want to go home without having tasted one! You’ll want to take some home for you family and friends, too.

Where to enjoy a good ensaimada

Anywhere, really. In Mallorca there are no events that don’t end with you tucking into a good ensaimada. You’ll find incredibly tasty ensaimadas in almost any bakery, patisserie and even supermarkets.

Many Mallorcan bars also serve ensaimadas, whether that’s an individual portion for just one diner or different quantities: six, nine or even up to fifteen portions.

5 recommended spots to taste an authentic, handmade ensaimada

Although they’re not the only ones, these places are perfect for tasting an authentic, traditional ensaimada, with designation of origin:

  1. Can Joan de S’aigo.

This is one of the locals’ favourite spots, so that’s saying something! This café serves Mallorca’s best handmade ensaimadas and you can enjoy them with homemade ice cream or a thick, Spanish hot chocolate.
  2. Panaderia Forn de Es Pont.

A classic that has been making exquisite ensaimadas since 1964. You can even order online, so that proves that tradition and new technologies make a good team.
  3. Horno de Santo Cristo.

This is one of Mallorca’s best-known bakeries as it was founded in 1910 and is located in an emblematic area: the old town.
  4. Es Forn de Sant Frances.

This spot won the prize for the world’s best ensaimada in 2017 and with good reason. Once you’ve tasted them, you’ll never forget their smell, texture and taste. Totally recommended.
  5. Pastelería M. Llull.

Another classic founded in 1953. This is the perfect example of an emblematic patisserie spot that’s adapted to today’s tastes without sacrificing the traditional quality, tastes and textures. As well as serving delicious ensaimadas with all the fillings you could imagine, you’ll also find Mallorcan cocas de trampó or vegetables, sweet cocarrois or cocas tapadas de musola, as well as other delicacies.
  6. Forn de Teatre.

A modernist oven with 19th century origins and after a façade renovation in 1916, this place is worth the visit if just for the architecture. Run by Tomeu Arbona and classified as one of the 80 best bakers in the country awarded by the platform Panàtics, absolutely everything here is incredibly delicious. You can tuck into plain or stuffed ensaimadas, as well as other typical products from the Balearic patisserie and a wide variety of Mallorcan liqueurs.
