Mallorcan wines are gaining increasing recognition on the international stage, with a growing number of devotees from both Spain and abroad. In fact, the finest Mallorcan wines can boast their own Denominación de Origen, the Spanish equivalent of appellation contrôlée; one is Vino de Binissalem and the other is Vino de Pla i Llevant.
Moreover, there’s the “Vino de la Tierra Mallorca” denomination, exclusively for those wines produced from grapes grown on Mallorca and bottled on the island. The most popular indigenous grape varieties are:
Many families are showing an interest in this intriguing form of tourism. As well as being a group activity, where you can get to know other people, you’ll also learn a great deal about Mallorca’s way of life and some of the island’s most fascinating traditions. Among the most popular venues for wine tasting on Mallorca we’d like to recommend the following:
This is found in the vicinity of Binissalem, a town steeped in history. Its architecture embodies all the traditional essence of Mallorca and is the ideal place for sampling the famous Mallorcan white wine and Mallorcan red wine. One option is to ride there by bicycle from Binissalem and enjoy the experience with the whole family.
A small family bodega located in the little village of Puigpunyent. As well as its meticulously made wine, this is notable for its possessió (country estate in the Mallorcan dialect), the architecture and atmosphere of which transport the visitor to a rural idyll. Visits need to be arranged in advance.
With its proximity to Hotels VIVA, this is the best option if you’re coming on a mini-break. Bodegas Son Prim produce vintages of high quality and one of the wines that you’re most likely to run into on the island. The charm of the bodega stems from the vineyards that surround it on all sides; these attract a growing number of visitors every year, eager to find out about the painstaking work that goes into wine production and the lifestyles of native islanders.
Here you’ll be able to enjoy wine tasting right in the midst of the vineyard, where they’ll show you the best way of savouring wine and how to appreciate such aspects as the flavour of the vintage, its fullness, the degree of acidity and the variety of grape used.
This bodega is owned by José Luis Roses and is the proud bearer of the Binissalem Denominación de Origen seal of quality. This is the ideal place for learning about the process of making and storing wine, from the harvesting of grapes in the vineyards all the way through to bottling.
The bodega can be found at the entrance to Binissalem; here you can visit a small museum and gain an insight into all the work that goes into creating and distributing wine of the utmost quality.
The passion that Mallorcans show for their terrain and traditions is what makes a wine tour of Mallorca one of the most fascinating activities on the island. Such is the importance of winemaking that every spring sees the holding of a Wine Days festival. One of the events open to the public is held at the San Fransesc cloisters in Palma, a tasting experience that enables visitors to sample virtually every wine produced on the island.
Here at Hotels VIVA we’re keen that you should savour this experience at first hand and that you complement your adventure by staying at one of our fine accommodation options. Book early to ensure the best prices!
