The origins of this special occasion data back to the 3rd century, in Rome. Legend says that the emperor of the time banned marriages in order to retain his best soldiers in the army. One priest, Saint Valentine, officiated at a secret wedding for a couple in love, only to be discovered and put to death on 14 February. 

It was not until 1840 that a company in North America promoted the exchange of messages between people in love on this day and called them “Valentines”. It caught on so strongly that we still use this date to celebrate love and friendship.
