It’s important to recognise that Mallorca is not just a destination for enjoying the sun, sea and sand in summer. It’s also one of Spain’s most special gastronomic centres. Mallorcan food is simply extraordinary, boasting exquisite dishes that represent the culture across the region.

At this time of year, Mallorcan cuisine is bursting with natural ingredients from the allotment. At Hotels VIVA, we want to introduce you to the traditional Mallorcan food that brings the whole family together during the festive period.

Mallorcan food at Christmas

  • Sopa Rellena de Nadal

As winter closes in, a hot bowl of soup is always very comforting and is perfect for beating that icy chill. The base for this Mallorcan soup is a traditional broth and it’s made with a type of pasta called “galets” stuffed with mince. Simply divine!

  • Sopa D’Amtella

We bet you’ve never tasted almond soup! When we said earlier that Mallorcan cuisine is extraordinary, we meant it. You definitely won’t regret tasting this Mallorcan Christmas dish. It’s made by adding fresh or roasted almonds to a broth. Once it comes to the boil, it’s ready to eat.

  • “Porcella” or Suckling pig

This is often the signature dish for Christmas dinner, especially in Mallorcan towns. What makes this dish so special is the way in which it’s marinated for 24 hours in lemon juice, olive oil, salt, black pepper, bay leaves and garlic. It smells and tastes incredible!

  • Coca de Torrò

This is one of the most popular desserts you’ll find on the table during Mallorcan Christmas dinner and a tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation. It’s a type of turrón made with raw almonds, giving it a particularly intense flavour.

Traditional Mallorcan dishes you can enjoy all year round

In addition to the traditional Mallorcan Christmas dishes, you can tuck into a fantastic offering of incredible flavours packed with colour and variety all year round. The Mallorcan allotment is definitely the star in all these dishes, as it’s one of the best in the country. Some of the top dishes are:

  • Coca de Trampó

This is a delicious combination of traditional vegetables from the region, such as bell peppers and onions, on a base made with flour, olive oil, water and egg. This is an excellent alternative for lovers of vegan cuisine who want to taste the flavours of Mallorca.

  • Frito Mallorquín

This is one of the most emblematic local dishes in Mallorcan food. It’s made by combining a variety of vegetables, including red bell peppers, spring onions, fennel, peas, broad beans and potatoes. This is then mixed with lamb or pig’s liver, but can also be made with seafood.

  • Arroz Brut

Also known as “Dirty Rice” because of the dark colour of the broth, this is one of Mallorca’s most important delicacies and is typically enjoyed with the family on a Sunday. It’s a brothy or soupy rice made with traditional Mallorcan food such as meat and charcuterie including sobrassada (smoked sausage paste) and butifarrón (sausage).
