If you are interested in local festivities, July is one of the busiest months of the year. This is the month when Cala Ratjada celebrates the day of its patron, the Virgen de Carmen. The saint is still honoured in the traditional way, with flowers, plenty of local food and lots of music.
How to celebrate the festival in Cala Ratjada?
The most moving, surprising and loveliest moment in the fiestas of Cala Ratjada takes place on the 16 July, when this pretty little fishing village pays homage to its patron with a mass celebrated on the fisherman’s wharf followed by a sea-borne procession of boats. It is a delightful ceremony highlighted by the colourful flowers that decorate the boats, each of which carries an image of the virgin.
There is a lot more to the fiestas of Cala Ratjada than this, because they take up the whole week, in which the streets and squares of the village are duly embellished and the whole population comes together in a special atmosphere of activities, fun and lots of music.
What is there to see and do in Cala Ratjada?
Cala Ratjada is an important fishing village in the north-east of Mallorca that belongs to the municipal area of Capdepera. Its main attractions are its beaches and natural setting. Its most outstanding point is Cala Agulla, which is a pretty and popular sandy beach that is only a 15-minute walk from Cala Ratjada and has the coveted blue flag. Another popular beach is Cala de Sa Font, which is more appropriate for family tourism.
Less well known, and therefore quieter and relatively undeveloped are tiny Cala Gata and the stony beach of Sa Pedruscada, with their little fishing shacks.
There are also a few sites of historic and cultural interest, such as the 19th century lighthouse or the Palace of the March family, where you can see sculptures by Chillida, Rodin and Henry Moore decorating the beautiful gardens.
