Es Trenc beach in Mallorca is one of the most popular beaches in the south of the island.
It's particularly renowned for its fine white sand and crystal clear waters which, depending on the effect of the light, can take on turquoise or emerald green hues, giving the surroundings a somewhat "Caribbean" look.
This beach is 7 kilometres long and some 35 metres wide, and is located in a naturally beautiful setting near Colonia de Sant Jordi, where the dunes and birds are the main attractions of the area.
In fact, one of the main attractions of Es Trenc beach is the fact that it's from the tourist hub, with no buildings or hotels to block the view inland.
More than 3,000 metres of sandy beach, divided into 3 distinct bathing areas
The sandy beach of Es Trenc is almost 3,000 metres long and is divided into three totally unspoilt areas: two sandy areas by the names of den Tem and den Tec, as well as the beach of Es Trenc.
The latter is perfect for relaxing, strolling and watching the sunset, which is absolutely breathtaking on this Mallorcan beach.
Es Trenc beach is also a good place to enjoy sports such as snorkelling and to take a good dip, as the waves are practically non-existent.
Some sections of the beach have lifeguard stations and a beach bar.
However, there's no shade, and so we recommend you to bring your own parasol or hire one there.
On the Es Trenc beach there are even nudist areas where nude bathing is also allowed.
As a curiosity, it’s possible to see old Second World War machine gun nests on this beach. These bunkers are abandoned, but, due to the erosion of the beach, they can be seen in the sand with the naked eye.
In high season, Es Trenc beach receives thousands of people a day, which causes considerable erosion of its dunes. For this reason, and in order to protect this beautiful landscape, access by car is limited.
How to get to Es Trenc beach in Mallorca
The Es Trenc beach is about 45 minutes by car from the city of Palma. To get there, you’ll need to take the MA-6040 road towards Colonia de Sant Jordi.
At kilometre 8.8, you will see a fork in the road and a track that ends in a dirt car park behind the Salobrar de Campos wetland.
Although the car park is completely safe and legal, and takes you right to the heart of this beach, there’s a charge for using it and spaces are limited, so it's advisable to arrive early to make sure you get a space.
The other way to drive to Mallorca's Es Trenc beach is from the small village of Ses Covetes.
You'll need to take the road towards Campos and then Sa Rapita, where you'll take the Ses Covetes - Es Trenc turnoff. The problem is that you'll also have to pay for parking, as parking in the ORA zone is practically impossible.
Another more affordable option is to take the 530 bus from Palma to Sa Rapita and Ses Covetes, and, from there, walk to Es Trenc. However, bear in mind that this bus is usually quite full in summer, and it makes a lot of stops.
Finally, you could book an organised excursion. This type of excursion usually picks up tourists at their hotels or in different areas of Palma, and drops them off at Colonia Sant Jordi. The walk from there to Es Trenc beach will take you between 15 and 30 minutes.
What to do in the vicinity of Es Trenc beach
Es Trenc beach in Mallorca is synonymous with swimming and sunbathing, but its wonderful surroundings mean that there are other activities that make for a great day out.
Next to the natural beach there's a wetland that goes by the name of Salobrar de Campos, a group of man-made lakes that extends over 1,500 hectares parallel to the coast.
Second only to the Alcudia lagoon, the Salobrar is a wonderful wetland area, where you can observe migratory birds such as flamingos, cormorants and storks.
History buffs can take advantage of their getaway to Es Trenc beach to visit Ses Salines, an area where you can see well-preserved Bronze Age settlements. They date from the Talayot era and are more than 4,000 years old.
Finally, close to the beach of Es Trenc, we find the island of Cabrera, a unique Natural Park that can only be reached by boat.
If you'd like to visit Cabrera island, the best option is to take a boat from Colonia de Sant Jordi.
Once there, you can take a dip and enjoy the Cova Blava, known for the special lighting effects in its waters.
